Chapter Eleven

Back aching from sitting in one of the waiting room’s plastic chairs, Julia raised her head as Rhys appeared in front of her. “Is it over? Is Owen Baker the Composer?”

Rhys shook his head and grabbed her hand. “Come with me. I wish I could tell you he broke down and confessed, but the truth is, it’s rarely as easy to get a confession as they make it seem on television. In a moment, Joshua is going to take him to a holding cell, where he’ll wait to be arraigned on hindering a law enforcement officer’s duties and assault charges for whacking me on the head.”

“Owen gave you the concussion?” She walked with Rhys down the hall toward the interrogation room.

When he had filled her in on his plan, she’d been eager to help. But now, she was petrified. What if Owen Baker was the Composer? Coming face-to-face with the man who’d terrorized her and killed all those women made her want to run out of the building. She laced her fingers with Rhys’s.

“He did,” Rhys said. “He confessed to that much.”

No matter what happened, Rhys would protect her. She didn’t know what was happening between them, but if it involved more of what they’d done earlier, she was all for it.

It was one thing to bonk someone over the head and another to murder multiple people. “What do you think? Is he my stalker?”

Rather than wearing it in a neat bun, she had left it down and loose like she had as a teenager. “I know he’s hiding something, but then again, who isn’t? He’s giving us a handwriting sample for comparison. If he did author those letters, the FBI handwriting analysts will figure it out, but even if he was your stalker, that doesn’t automatically mean he’s the Composer. It’s just a theory until there’s evidence to support it.”

She and Rhys stopped a few feet past the interrogation room. Rhys sent a text to Joshua, and a minute later, Joshua and another man came through the door. Although it had been years, she recognized Owen Baker. He hadn’t changed much except for his hair, which he used to wear much shorter. She held her breath. Since becoming an adult, she’d lost most of her face’s roundness and gained that fullness at her bust and hips. The question was, would he recognize her?

Joshua led a handcuffed Owen in their direction. She held her breath, waiting for Owen’s reaction.

But there wasn’t one.

The second Owen spotted Rhys and her in the hallway, he angled his head away from them, as if he didn’t want to be seen in his current state. To Julia, that seemed like a normal response to being arrested. Owen didn’t give her a second look. He didn’t appear to recognize her. If he was her stalker, wouldn’t he have reacted to her presence?

Owen disappeared around the corner. The holding cells, as well as
